Your t(w)een is a good kid. Really. \nIt is so easy to get triggered when\nour children shut us out\,\n“won’t listen\,”\ndon’t seem to want to cooperate\,\nor are having trouble in social settings or school.\nIt can be hard to remember to plug in a little play\, set a limit with warmth\, or stay present and listen to the tough things our children share or show us. \nThe Hand in Hand tools are powerful for connecting with our children\, but the way in which we use them changes as our children get older. Even parents who have been using these tools for many years\, find that in order to use the Hand in Hand tools to support their t(w)eens well\, they may need more support themselves. \nThat’s where the benefit of being listened to can be transformational! \nKirsten and Ravid offer a regular weekly Skillbuilding Group (4 or 8-week options)\, for parents who have already taken a Hand in Hand Foundations/ Starter Course\, a Raising Happier T(w)eens Class\, or equivalent. Here you will get a chance to dive deeper into practicing the tools with your t(w)eens\, be offered refresher ideas\, to ask questions\, share experiences\, and get oh-so-powerful Listening Time. \n***This group does not give you access to an online classroom. It is meant to build on the skills you have learned from a previous Hand in Hand class.*** \nRegister Here for the Skillbuilding Group for Parents of Tweens\nhttps://www.handinhandworkshops.com/events/tweens-sbc-feb-apr-2024/ \nIf you are interested in taking a Hand in Hand Foundations/ Starter Course specially designed FOR PARENTS OF T(W)EENS\, we are offering our next 6 week Raising Happier T(w)eens Class starting March 14\, 2024\, which includes access to an online classroom full of videos\, suggested readings\, and homework assignments . Please join that class if you’d like to get a deeper understanding of using the tools with your t(w)een. More love\, more beautiful\, more fulfilling\, … and also\, more stressful\, scary\, worrisome\, frustrating\, lonely\, confusing\, exhausting\, and isolating. \nWe are good parents who sometimes have a hard time. When we get stressed\, overwhelmed\, scared\, we often act with our children (and others) in ways that we did not “plan” to act. Most parents say or do things we regret at some point. We don’t understand why we can’t seem to stop it\, as hard as we try. We snap. We yell. We revert to patterns that we swore we didn’t want to pass on to our kids. Someone’s voice other than our own comes flying out of our mouths. \nThen we feel bad and we don’t want to tell anyone\, because this was not what we had in mind and not how we planned to parent. The truth is that the worse we feel\, and the more alone we feel\, the more likely these patterns are to pop up again. And again. \n \nThere are very real reasons why this keeps happening. You are not alone\, and you are not a “bad parent.” \nYou deserve good support. You deserve compassion and kindness. You can find solutions for those “hot spots” that you know can be tricky. You can heal. You can change generational patterns. You can feel more confident about your parenting. \nThis class will offer insight into why we so easily and quickly get triggered. You’ll learn practical\, feet on the ground tools to change this dynamic\, both in the moment and for long term change. \nFor parents of children aged infant through the teen years. \nFor more info go to https://www.handinhandworkshops.com/why-we-lose-it-natick/ \ncontact kirsten@handinhandworkshops.com if cost is prohibitive URL:https://www.handinhandparenting.org/event/why-we-lose-it-with-our-kids-and-how-we-can-get-it-back-in-person-class-natick-ma-with-kirsten-nottleson-20250723/ LOCATION:Roots and Wings Yoga and Healing Arts Studio\, 317 N. During the session\, you will have the opportunity to meet other parents and carers of neurodivergent children\, ask questions to Instructors with lived experience of neurodivergence\, and get Listening support in small groups. \nWhat do we mean by neurodiverse families?   \nNeurodiversity is a term that describes a range of differences in the way people’s brains work and how they learn\, think\, communicate\, and behave. Some (but by no means all) neurodivergent individuals have diagnoses such as autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia\, dyscalculia\, OCD\, anxiety\, Tourette’s or Down Syndrome; these may have been present since birth or acquired later in life. As awareness of neurodiversity has grown in recent years\, many parents have found themselves exploring whether they or their child might be neurodivergent. To join this group you do not need a diagnosis\, or even clarity about the neurotypes within your family\, just a willingness to explore how the Hand in Hand approach can be helpful in your parenting if you know (or suspect) that you have neurodivergence of some form within your family.  \nJoin our free Zoom support calls \nOne of the things we’ve noticed in our years of being involved with Hand in Hand Parenting is that it can feel hugely supportive to be around other parents with similar experiences; whether they arise from feeling like parenting is harder in our families or that we face more judgment and lack of understanding from others. It can sometimes feel isolating to be the only parent in a group whose children do not respond to life’s events in a way that is considered ‘typical’ or have upsets that do not resolve quickly. We aim to create a safe space where you can share openly about the joys and challenges of raising your incredible children and break down that isolation.  \nOf course\, neurodivergent children sometimes have neurodivergent parents and family members and we warmly welcome all parents and carers no matter their neurotype. We have lived experience of neurodivergence and encourage you to contact us with your access requirements. We focus on using Hand in Hand’s five Listening Tools to meet our parenting challenges and are united by a desire to: \n\nBuild support for ourselves as parents or caregivers in neurodivergent families\nRespond to challenging behaviors with confidence and trust in our child’s goodness\nSet effective limits with warmth and respect\nExperience more joy and playfulness in parenting\nStrengthen relationships in our families\nSee our children thrive\n\nYou’re welcome to ask for input or ideas on specific issues while we explore how you can put the Tools into practice and make them work for you and your individual family situation.  \nDates \nAll calls scheduled are on the final Wednesday of the month at 12 noon Pacific\, 3pm Eastern\, 8pm UK\n**please note that this call follows the UK time changes.  Use www.worldtimebuddy.com to find the time in your time zone.**\n \n\nJanuary 29\, \nFebruary 26\, \nMarch 26\, \nApril 30\, \nMay 28\, \nJune 25\n\nZoom calls are 90 minutes long and typically occur on the final Wednesday of every month. Simply register for any or all ND Connect Events in 2025\, using this link\, and we will send you the Zoom link and access information. Please join the call within 15 minutes of the start time\, ideally from a private space so that you can participate fully.  \nHand in Hand provides programs for all people who are caring for children in any capacity. We occasionally offer specialized programs for people in particular caregiving roles and/or identity groups to provide support specific to their experiences. The ND Connect events are for parents/carers of neurodivergent children in any caretaking role. \nEach call will be facilitated by two or more Certified Hand in Hand Instructors. Depending on which month it is\, you’ll get to meet: \n\nAdrianne Kmet\, \nAlison Kemi\, \nHannah Gauri Ma\, \nKris Kohlmann\, \nLara Zane\, \nPriya Saaral or \nVelma Gentzsch\n\n  \nSometimes\, we’ll be joined by other Instructors or Instructor Candidates depending on group size. As a community\, Hand in Hand Parenting has been listening to the experience of our neurodivergent Instructors and those parenting neurodivergent children to support each other and help us support you.  \nClick here to register now \nGot further questions?  \nRead on to see our FAQs or ask them when you register on the link above. \n  \nFrequently Asked Questions \nWhat kind of experience will there be among instructors leading the call? \nMany of our Hand in Hand instructors have experience and understanding of various expressions of neurodivergence including autism\, ADHD\, PDA\, dyslexia\, OCD\, and anxiety. It is not in our remit as Hand and Hand Parenting Instructors to give psychological or psychiatric advice\, and we will not be able to advise on whether your child would benefit from assessment or diagnosis. Instead\, we will support you to attune to each unique child in your family\, build connection not only in cosy times or through play and laughter but also in tricky moments and help you to lift your own worries and fears so you can see situations with more clarity and understanding. \nWill you teach more about autism/ADHD/PDA etc during these events? \nNot directly\, as this is outside of our remit as Hand in Hand Instructors. Instead\, we focus on creating a foundation for understanding how your child’s emotions affect them in different ways and how to deepen the connection that you both need to navigate these years together. You will build support and discover how different ways of responding can affect your relationship and your child’s ability to engage with the world and gain confidence in themselves. Our experience has shown us that with careful attunement and nuanced use\, the Hand in Hand Parenting tools work brilliantly to support neurodivergent and neurotypical children alike\, as well as their parents or caregivers.  \nWhile we won’t be teaching about different neurotypes\, you are warmly encouraged to ask questions as you experiment with these tools. By taking a neuroaffirming approach\, we can help you to explore ways of adapting these tools for your unique children\, whatever their needs and neurotype. \nCan I join the call while my child is present?  \nNo\, this call is a time for you to focus on your own self-care and we want you to be able to talk freely and uncensored about your family. We appreciate it can be difficult to get time for ourselves as busy parents and carers. Yet\, some of the content of the session will be confidential\, so we need you to find a quiet space where you will not be overheard. This can be a separate room in your home\, in a private office\, in your car or even asking a friend or relative if you can be in a room at their home. Many parents arrange to have another parent\, family member or babysitter present to allow their participation in these calls or find some way for their child to be occupied in a separate room so they will not be interrupted.  \nWhat happens on the Zoom call?   \nThere will be at least two or three Hand in Hand Parenting Instructors with professional and/or lived experience of neurodivergence. We will welcome you by introducing ourselves and inviting you to do so\, too. At Hand in Hand\, we always begin our calls by sharing something that is going well\, no matter how small\, and we will take the time to do this as part of getting to know each other a little. Throughout the call\, you can respond aloud (if the group size allows it and you’re comfortable with that) or in the chat.  \nNext\, we’ll share some ideas around connecting with our neurodivergent children based on the Hand in Hand Parenting approach. There will be time for questions\, and you can submit these in advance when you click this registration link. We can’t promise to discuss all your questions during the call time but will use them as a basis for planning each session.  \nWe will explain and demonstrate our support tool for parents\, Listening Partnerships\, and offer you the opportunity to have a go. In pairs or in a small group (depending on numbers) we will listen warmly to you as you explore whatever topic you choose. It’s a great opportunity to think aloud about ideas discussed during the session and how they relate to your family. Anything shared during this time is held in the strictest confidence\, and as listeners\, we hold an attitude of respect and confidence in your ability to find your own solutions. \nWe will close the call by sharing what we appreciate or are taking away from the call.  \nI am diagnosed/identify as a neurodivergent adult. Are these events a good fit for me? \nWe warmly welcome parents/carers of any neurotype. We have lived experience of neurodivergence ourselves and understand it can feel daunting to turn up to a Zoom call. We will endeavour to make it a safe space for all. Please contact us if you wish to discuss your access requirements or have any questions. There is no one ‘right way’ to show up in this space. Rather we invite you to come as you are. We can’t wait to meet you. \nClick here to register now \n  URL:https://www.handinhandparenting.org/event/nd-connect-a-support-group-for-neurodiverse-families/2025-07-30/ LOCATION:Online Event CATEGORIES:Free Parenting Classes & Events,Online Parenting Classes & Events,Parent Support Groups ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.handinhandparenting.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ND-connect-website-image.png ORGANIZER;CN="Alison Kemi":MAILTO:alison@handinhandparenting.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20250731T130000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20250731T140000 DTSTAMP:20250714T181654 CREATED:20250709T121430Z LAST-MODIFIED:20250709T121430Z UID:10009488-1753966800-1753970400@www.handinhandparenting.org SUMMARY:Effective Methods That Strengthen Your Impact—Without Adding More to Your Plate DESCRIPTION:You care deeply and bring your best every day. T(w)eenagers often blame themselves for the troubles they experience. When that is too painful\, they can become angry or moody with us\, have trouble concentrating on tasks\, or shut themselves away as they retreat into towers of isolation. \nBut we don’t have to let them stay at such a distance from us. Teens and tweens need their parents to reach out for genuine connection. Neuroscience has revealed much about what is happening in the teen brain (it’s not “just hormones”) and what teenagers need to navigate the tricky waters of adolescence and grow into healthy\, thriving adults. \nWe can find doors into their world. We can learn to stay thoughtful and present through the most intense of their feelings. We can love this amazing time of their life. \nThis in-person workshop will help you understand the things that make life challenging for our teens and tweens\, and cues for decoding their behaviors. We may wonder why our teens act distant\, seem moody\, and have trouble concentrating in the tasks before them. Our teenagers often blame themselves for the troubles they experience. When that is too painful\, they can become angry with us or shut themselves away as they retreat into their towers of isolation. \nBut we don’t have to let them stay at such a distance from us. Teens and tweens need their parents to reach out for a genuine connection. Brain science has taught us so much that we didn’t know or understand in years past about teenagers and what kind of support they need to navigate the tricky waters of adolescence and grow into healthy adults. \nIn order to build bridges between our children and ourselves\, we have to learn to stay thoughtful and supportive through the most intense of their feelings. We have to keep letting them know that\, no matter how they feel or what they do\, we love them and want their lives to be good. We’ll stand by them\, no matter what. \nThis talk will help you understand the things that make life challenging for our teenagers and cues for decoding their often challenging behaviors. It will offer proven ways to become more deft at guiding them through these formative years. We can find doors into their internal world. We can find ways to make\, rather than break\, connection. \nWe have to have good support for ourselves in order to do this. We worry about the increasingly riskier behavior and social relationships our kids are involved in. Oftentimes\, our own experiences as teens clouds our ability to see our children with fresh and present eyes. I’ll share a powerful parent to parent listening tool that can literally save your relationship with your child. \n \nAdditional topics:\n– Learn to identify the specific connection makers and breakers that are most impactful for your child\n– Chores and responsibilities: how to decide what hills to defend and which to let go of\n– Play still plays a vital role in your relationship… how to inject it into daily life\n– Learn how small moments of connection can make a big difference\n– Handling “sass” or “attitude” (hint: the answer is not punishment)\n– Making room for our grief and being flexible as the relationship shifts (and yes\, it will) \nFor parents of children aged 9-19 years old.
